Term meaning "those who sacrifice themselves" or "men of sacrifice." The term applied to Palestinian guerrilla units that were formed in Palestinian refugee camps following Israel's War of Independence (1948—49) and, with Egyptian training and logistical support, launched terrorist raids from bases in the Gaza Strip into Israel beginning in the summer of 1955.
